After the rave reviews of #1, the book had very high expectations placed on it. But Wilson and Alphona clearly know what they're doing and it shows.The next step in Kamala's journey to being a hero are presented here and everything that happens, without getting into spoilers, is funny, heartfelt, and poignant. Kamala herself is wonderfully presented. I love how she can literally go from recalling a quote from the Quran in one panel to herself quoting "The Simpsons" in the next. It's a perfect example of the way Kamala is the product of two cultures. Even better, both situations make perfect sense in the context of the story.
Wilson deserves massive respect for that balancing act as well as the other points she makes in this story in regards to identity, family, and what really makes someone a hero. Best of all, these points are all very clearly made but aren't preachy or made in ways that beat the reader over the head. It's smart story-telling and I love it.
Of course, points must be given to Alphona's artwork. It does so much to make the story at different times funny, foreboding, and exciting. He's clearly been sharpening his skills since "Runaways" and this book only benefits from that.
At the end of the day, this book is everything you could ask for in a second issue. This is one of the best monthlies Marvel is putting out and if you love superheroes then you own it to yourself to give "Ms. Marvel" a try.
