This was a different kind of book, at least I thought, for Iain Rob Wright. I enjoyed it of course, just like I've enjoyed all his books I've read. All kinds of monsters locked up in "cages" they can't get out of. The very monsters you had nightmares about when you were a child. Hundreds of years old. A couple of adorable ones though. Loved that! Heaven and Hell. Good and Evil. Do the good guys win or do the monsters kill everyone? You must read this book and find out.
Ok..... Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Mr. Konrath. I have also recently been following Mr. Wright because when I found out that 'Holes in the Ground' was going to have characters from Iain's The Final Winter', I couldn't exactly start the sequel without some good character references. I have to say that I loved 'The Final Winter' and went out and grabbed all of Iain's books (btw.... He is such a cool guy that you can ask him for an ebook that you are missing and he'll send it to you for free).
All that being said, the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I still preferred 'Origin'. However, this was a close second. It starts off a little slowly but once our heroes, (Andy, Sun, and Jerry) get to the new facility, the story just takes off. You get action, horror, comedy, and fun all in one novel. What more can a gal ask for? You definitely need to pick this one up if you enjoyed 'Origin' as it has the same tone as the first. And, if you have yet to read Iain's books.... What are you waiting for?
I'm trying to think of something good to say about this book and the only thing I can say is that it brings back two very likable characters from "Origin". Some of the book is so ridiculous that I wondered what Konrath must have been thinking. But I always read books to the end regardless. Sorry ... I didn't like this one.
Started out with Holes in the Ground and after such a great read I had to go back and read Origin. J.A. Konrath you are a terrific Author. I have loved everything you have written with the exception on Grandma. Also your Jack Daniels series is excellent too. Keep doing what you do.
I like horror books- Konrath and Kilborn are some of my favorites but it seems to me that their more recent works are becoming more superficial action and less of the supernatural/suspense thrillers of the past. Sadly, while this book isn't a bad read (and I didn't read the one before this one and didn't really "feel" lost) it was too cliche "monsters are after us so everything blows up" for my taste.
Iian rob wright one of my all time greatest writers, was very surprised when reading second version that some characters were very different and weren't from his mind. Loved Loved Loved this book, definetly need and want a book 2.
Holes in the Ground is actually two books in one. The first story is a collaboration between Konrath and Wright and the second story was wrote only by Wright. I personally liked the first one because the imps and Wolfie were more involved and you have a few more survivors. If you’ve read Origin then Holes in the Ground is a must read.
